Air Products outsourced services to Intertek Analytical Sciences Americas, a division of the multinational company specializing in scientific product and safety analysis.

Under the long-term outsourcing deal, Intertek will rent renovated secure lab space on Air Products' Trexlertown campus, and use the facility to sell the scientists'services to other companies in other industries.

Lab director Sherri Bassner said the department's analysts are "scientific problem solvers" who are consulted at any point in the product development cycle, from conceptualization through deployment, to provide analysis that can improve a performance or troubleshoot problems.

"That is exactly the kind of work we will be looking to do for other companies," Bassner said. "We have developed a broad range of skills: fundamental scientific understanding that can be applied to a number of different industries, products and indications. We'll be looking to grow this."

Intertek will be able to capitalize on the former Air Products scientists' skills to offer the same "high-end analytical laboratory services" to other industries, especially in the growing medical devices and testing industries, said Neil Chapman, Vice President of Intertek Analytical Services Americas.

Laboratory Outsourcing in 2009

By Andrew Swift, Ph.D.
Executive VP for Intertek Analytical Services Division

Successful laboratory outsourcing relationships require innovative management and contractual models, tailor made to address the parent company’s needs.

Outsourcing of non-core support services is an established concept in many areas of modern manufacturing and is widely managed on a daily basis in the workplace. Laboratory functions regarded as ‘strategic but not core’ are in scope for outsourcing, including measurement and analytical science.

Historically, analytical services has been the preserve of dedicated ‘in-house’ laboratories, tasked to support new product R&D and corporate innovation with measurement and analytical data. But today, while the need to innovate remains more ‘strategic and core’ than ever, measurement support doesn't have to be. Outsourcing the facility to a dedicated service provider not only delivers short term savings and commercial benefit to the parent company, it increases its agility to respond to today’s fast moving and international market place.

In each segment of the outsourcing decision matrix below, a dedicated laboratory analytical service provider can provide the client custom practical solutions which meet the objectives of the organisation, whether through outsourcing or consultancy support.

Organisations are pressured to deliver greater returns in a world of falling commodity prices and dwindling new product pipelines. Yet this same climate presents great growth opportunities for the dedicated analytical services provider, who attaches high value to such assets to support and sustain their own business model and who can capture still greater value from growing this expert resource in the wider international market place.
